Jesse poked at the campfire with a stick. It was their last night on their current job, and he was ready to leave their campsite, and the trailer they’d been sleeping in for four days now, and head home to his own bed. Not that he minded the work. In fact, it was a tremendous relief to be back doing manual labour. The more nails he could hammer and two-by-fours he could haul around, the better. Doing was far better than thinking.

Not to mention that it felt good to be making an income again. He’d blown through a lot of savings the last few months, so the opportunity to replenish his resources was welcome.

Brendan carried plates over to the picnic table, next to where Shane stood behind a barbeque, cooking dinner. “Well, the one good thing about everybody being so upset is we get a lot of work done.”

Shane frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“You and Jesse. I mean, the two of you work pretty hard anyway, but now that you’ve both broken up with the women in your lives, you’re working like crazy men. This job was supposed to take all day tomorrow, but we’re almost done.”

Shane flipped a burger and it landed on the grill with an angry hiss. “I didn’t break up with Abby. We mutually decided it wasn’t going to work out between us. I’m not upset about it.”

“And I definitely did not break up with Meryn. She broke up with me. But I’m not upset either.” Jesse stabbed viciously at the campfire.

Brendan set a plate down on the table. “I stand corrected. Clearly you’re both deliriously happy. The fact remains that we’re powering through our work quickly and should be able to be back home by—”

A buzzing sound cut him off.

He pulled his i-com from his shirt pocket. “It’s Hope.” He lifted the device to his ear. “Hello?”

Jesse grabbed another piece of wood and propped it against the pile in the fire pit.

The smell of cooking meat wafted on a cloud of smoke across their site.

“What?” The last plastic plate Brendan had been holding clattered onto the table. “Is she all right?”

Jesse froze. He speared the stick into the ground and caught Shane’s eye.

Shane set down the lifter and came around the barbeque.

Jesse edged toward them. Was it Meryn?

“Are you sure?” Brendan drove his fingers through his dark hair as he listened. “Did she go to the hospital?”

Shane tapped his arm.

Brendan held up a hand. “Do they think it was deliberate?”

Was what deliberate? Had someone hurt Meryn? The thought of anyone doing her harm dragged a murderous rage up from Jesse’s belly to his chest.

“Should we come home?” Brendan didn’t speak for a moment, then he blew out a breath. “I’m sure she needs rest more than anything. But please have her call one of us as soon as she wakes up. Even if it’s the middle of the night.” He listened again, massaging his temple with his free hand. “Thanks for staying with her, Hope.
